🚓Broome Sheriff Akshar Begrudgingly Complies with ICE Cooperation Ban
The Broome County Sheriff's Office has announced it will comply with the New York State Local Cops, Local Crimes Act, preventing cooperation with ICE.
The 287(g) agreement between ICE and the Broome County Sheriff's Office allowed corrections officers in the jail, after ICE training, to execute warrants on inmates already in custody. This resulted in community protests against the cooperation (NC34).
Sheriff Fred Akshar called this an "egregious act of government overreach" and said he will take legal action against the new law (Press & Sun).
