🚨🏫Cornell Gang Rape Allegation Shakes the Southern Tier and State

The District Attorney of Tompkins County has reopened a case of 7 male students in a fraternity at Cornell University who allegedly drugged a female student with ketamine and raping her for hours in 2024 (NC34). This has prompted public outrage across the region and the country.

The case was originally reported to Cornell police, but according to the Tompkins County DA, the case was reported in a "dramatically different" fashion to the office at the time, not mentioning drugs or a lack of consent. However, the DA's office did not independently investigate and is now under scrutiny by New York State officials, and law enforcement involved have been denounced by Gov. Hochul (NY Times). An independent probe into the case will occur.

The case is being sent to Grand Jury, and the City of Ithaca government has suspended all student event and special event permits until the university reevaluates its protocol around sexual violence (WBNG). New York State legislators are proposing changes to consent laws following revelations around the rape case (WSKG).

🦠Measles Confirmed in Broome County

A case suspected as measles last week has been confirmed positive by the Broome County Health Department. The patient is not a Broome County resident and attended a wedding in a plain community (Amish or Mennonite) that health officials have called a super-spreader event (NC34).

The patient was discharged and contact tracing notifications occurred (WBNG)

The potentially deadly disease has seen a resurgence in recent years due to reduced vaccination rates.

The best way to prevent measles is vaccination, which is offered by the Broome County Health Dept.
