👮Sheriff Akshar faces blowback from Salmonella poisoning
Multiple inmates were hospitalized (NC34) from the Broome County Jail after 320 of the 450 inmates caught the bacterial infection of Salmonella from contaminated chicken salad served to them (Press & Sun).
Some not hospitalized still reported symptoms days after what is one of the largest such incidents in New York history (WSKG). A group which includes former inmates released since the incident is now accusing Sheriff Fred Akshar, who oversees the jail, of negligence and malfeasance via a class action lawsuit (Press & Sun), saying that it showed a dereliction of duty and alleged other sanitation issues at the jail (NC34). Akshar said the move was a publicity stunt and that the sheriff's office is working to manage the crisis.
Following an inspection, the County Health Department found six violations, including improper refrigeration (NC34).
💸The Agency (IDA) Accused of Inappropriate Spending
The Broome County Industrial Development Agency (The Agency) is under scrutiny for over $47,000 in questionable business purchases for travel, alcohol, and other expenses following an audit (Press & Sun), as it focuses on projects like building revitalization and the controversial Broome Tech Park (WSKG).
The Agency "strongly rejects" the narrative and conclusions of the report (NC34)
🏗️Endicott Revitalization Plan Seeks Input
The Village of Endicott wants community stakeholders and residents to contribute feedback to a new master plan to guide future priorities and initiatives (Press & Sun). Organizers for "Imagine Endicott" held an open house for the effort on June 2.
Plan documents can be viewed here, including a full draft.
This pairs with the completion of DRI initiatives like the Washington Ave. improvements and the creation of an art park (WNBF), as well as planned expansions by BAE in the Village's former IBM campus (Press & Sun) and federal dollars for Little Italy streetscape improvements (Fox40).
