BINGHAMTON – The Roberson Museum may not be the mansion-turned-museum that comes to mind as a local music hub. But, during May’s First Friday, few things better captured the variety of genres, styles, and aesthetics of Binghamton’s growing music scene than its first Music Video Festival.

Subtitled “Binghamton Out of this World,” the event showcased recent music videos by 13 Binghamton-area bands in Roberson’s planetarium. The result was a fantastic hour-long introduction to the current Binghamton grassroots music scene.

“It was both inspiring and exciting,” said the band Kipani in a message following the event.

“We were exposed to new local groups and enjoyed the opportunity to be immersed in an hour of uninterrupted art, featuring many different creative approaches.”

Local venues and landmarks featured heavily in the videos, which varied in genre from hardcore to pop, rap, indie rock and cowboy trap.

“Part of Roberson's mission in this community is platforming regional artists, and it's not lost on anyone here how significant the music scene is to our regional arts culture,”  said Sullivan Harris, Marketing Manager at Roberson Museum.

“Music can be difficult to display in a Museum since, in its raw form, it is an audio medium. We settled on a music video festival to combine the communal experience of the Planetarium with the experience of listening to local music, while also making it accessible to folks who aren't as keen on going out to a bar or venue to see live music.”

Harris said the festival showcased the “immense amount of diverse talent in our local music and film scene,” and involved the work of almost 50 artists between the local filmmakers, musicians, actors, audio engineers, and more who created the videos. They emphasized the diverse talent in the local music and film scene.

“It was so nice to see so many artists not only involved, but also show up to support the event with their friends,” said Brittany Miller, who performs under the name Amoreena and showcased her video for the song “Pastel Pink”.

“It was a super cool event that I hope becomes a staple – also a really great use of the planetarium!”

Two of the videos, Kipani’s ”Nice to Be Me”, produced by My Oh Myers Productions, and Peaches & Crime’s ”Widows Waltz”, produced by Binghamton puppeteer Mark Dickinson, premiered at the event.

Peaches & Crime won the festival’s People’s Choice award for best video and a $100 prize.

Angela Schwartz, lead singer and songwriter for Peaches & Crime, said the band has been looking to collaborate with Dickinson for some time. She said the darker tone of this song worked well with Dickinson’s experience bringing different classic horror stories like the works of Edgar Allen Poe to life with his puppets.

“We were really glad that he was able to bring that creativity to one of our songs,” Schwartz said.
