BINGHAMTON — The Broome County Arts Council is hosting the first-ever Broome Arts Festival, commemorating its 40th anniversary and celebrating the growing local arts scene in the Triple Cities area.
The free festival is taking place from 10 am to 5 pm tomorrow, Saturday, Sep. 19, in the Downtown Arts District on State Street between Lewis and Henry Street.
More than 50 booths with oil painting, woodwork, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, stone, sculpture, metalwork, wearable fibers, original published works, and more by artists from Broome and surrounding counties within a 75-mile radius will be present, alongside thirteen nonprofit arts and cultural organizations that will table alongside them. Atomic Tom's will stage live performances throughout the event spotlighting poets, musicians and the Tri-Cities Opera.

On the street, attendees will find live artist demos, dance performances, a children's chalk art area, a community art canvas, face painting, and more. To see more of the city's art, a trolley mural tour will be running with a pickup at the Water Street Garage at 12 pm and 1 pm. Businesses on State Street such as galleries and restaurants will be open, and food trucks will be present.
“This festival is a response to our creative community, who have asked us for greater visibility and a closer connection with the audiences right here at home," said Jenny Chang, the Executive Director of the Broome County Arts Council.
"In our 40th year of supporting the arts through fundraising, grantmaking, and public programming, it seemed only fitting to bring a festival right into the Downtown Arts District, where BCAC has made its home these past four years."
The BCAC has spent the last forty years helping build and sustain the local arts scene through grants, fundraising, advocacy, training, and public programming like the monthly First Friday Art Walk. The nonprofit has distributed more than $12 million through United Cultural Fund to individual artists, arts organizations, and community projects across Broome County, and runs more than 15 community programs.
“The Broome County Arts Council is an essential part of the Southern Tier’s arts ecosystem, and its contributions have greatly enriched the City of Binghamton while supporting our local artists," said City of Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham.
"The City’s investments in a newly upgraded and walkable arts district are in part because of BCAC’s advocacy and belief in our arts community.”
For the next 40 years, BCAC officials say they look forward to continuing to create, connect, and collaborate with the community, and to keep innovating its approaches as the environment around it changes.
