🛣️Parks and Highway Makeover Underway
The massive 363 Gateway Project has officially broken ground as it seeks to calm traffic, expand the Two Rivers Greenway, add riverfront access and increase park space near Confluence Park (Press & Sun).
The clover leaf onramps will be removed in favor of a more pedestrian-focused intersection and paths. Trees were removed in February for pre-construction, which will be replaced alongside other plants and flowers throughout the corridor (WBNG).
🚓🏛️Akshar Feuds with NYS Over Termination of ICE Agreement with Broome County Jail
Due to a new state law, the Broome County Sheriffs Departmetn has been forced to end its 287(g) agreement (WBNG) for collaboration with certain immigration enforcement with the controversial Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency after protests over its collaboration (Pipe Dream).
The new law, called the 'Local Cops, Local Crimes' Act prohibits local governments from making these agreements, which adocates say diverts local resources to federal enfocement.
Akshar called the law "white noise" and "hipocracy". All 12 agreements by local governments in NY must end by August 25 (Press & Sun).
