🍎Broome County declares state of emergency over SNAP

As SNAP benefits are set to lapse on Nov. 1, the county has declared a state of emergency as delays and reductions are anticipated for SNAP food assistance programs (WSKG)

Rides to food pantries and resources on Broome County Transit buses will be free for SNAP recipients who show their EBT card to the driver, emergency food is being purchased, and food pantries like Food Bank of the Southern Tier and CHOW are bracing for the impact.

If you can, consider donating some cash to local food pantries.

If you need it, here is Broome County Food Council’s emergency food access map

Broome County added an emergency food assistance guide to its website

🚄Binghamton Amtrak station

Mayor Kraham wants to secure a federal grant for a passenger rail study in the area (WBNG).

Being in the center of the Northeast, it makes some sense - especially since Amtrak currently goes through Syracuse, and Scranton and Allentown are already on their own pathways to restoring service.

Just an FYI - these sort of things typically see a long time to come to fruition and rely on deals with track owners like Norfolk Southern.

My take? Give us a Syracuse -> Binghamton -> Scranton -> Allentown -> Philadelphia line!
